چکیده

In the McGurk effect, incongruent visual information alters the auditory speech percept. We studied the strength of this effect as a function of auditory signal-to-noise ratio (SNR: -12, -6, 0, +6 dB, and noise-free) in Finnish adults, American adults and American children (8–12 years). The McGurk stimuli were A/p/V/k/ (auditory /apa/ presented with visual /aka/), A/p/V/t/, A/k/V/p/ and A/t/V/p/. As SNR decreased, proportion of responses based on the auditory component decreased and visual influence got stronger. All participants showed this pattern, though in some instances Finns showed weaker visual influence. Overall, the McGurk effect was very similar in these language and age groups.

Audiovisual sentence recognition not predicted by susceptibility to the McGurk effect.

In noisy situations, visual information plays a critical role in the success of speech communication: listeners are better able to understand speech when they can see the speaker. Visual influence on auditory speech perception is also observed in the McGurk effect, in which discrepant visual information alters listeners' auditory perception of a spoken syllable. When hearing /ba/ while seeing a...

Effect of Vowel Auditory Training on the Speech-In-Noise Perception among Older Adults with Normal Hearing

Introduction: Aging reduces the ability to understand speech in noise. Hearing rehabilitation is one of the ways to help older people communicate effectively. This study aimed to investigate the effect of vowel auditory training on the improvement of speech-in-noise (SIN) perception among elderly listeners.   Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 36 elderly ...

Effects of ageing on speed and temporal resolution of speech stimuli in older adults

Background: According to previous studies, most of the speech recognition disorders in older adults are the results of deficits in audibility and auditory temporal resolution. In this paper, the effect of ageing on timecompressed speech and auditory temporal resolution by word recognition in continuous and interrupted noise was studied. Methods: A time-compressed speech test (TCST) w...

McGurk effect in non-English listeners: few visual effects for Japanese subjects hearing Japanese syllables of high auditory intelligibility.

The McGurk effect is a phenomenon that demonstrates a perceptual fusion between auditory and visual (lip-read) information in speech perception under the condition of audio-visual discrepancy, created by dubbed video tapes. This paper investigated whether or not the McGurk effect could be extended to Japanese subjects listening to Japanese syllables of different auditory intelligibility. The au...

Effect of signal to noise ratio on the speech perception ability of older adults

Background: Speech perception ability depends on auditory and extra-auditory elements. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is an extra-auditory element that has an effect on the ability to normally follow speech and maintain a conversation. Speech in noise perception difficulty is a common complaint of the elderly. In this study, the importance of SNR magnitude as an extra-auditory effect on speech...
